This unique original homestead was built by the Pickering family before the turn of last century. However, after years of neglect a rescue job was required, and the result is exemplary. It is now a clever blend of old and new that the architect, John Mainwearing, described as “a rural piazza”.
Apart from the main homestead, all other buildings are new. A series of free standing pavilions that include the main house, a guest house, workshop and gallery. They are all sited on a delightful ridge, in a park land setting that includes a lake sized dam, rolling lawns and a forest featuring tall Bunya Pines. The property has frontage to the Mary River and every pavilion enjoys a wonderful rural vista.
This magnificent home consists of three buildings that form a crescent shape and are connected by timber walkways. The original homestead has been converted into a living and dining area with two original bedrooms currently used as studies.
The living area is now a light filled, flexible open plan which can be divided partly or wholly by sliding screens, while the retractable glass walls can open the area to a screened walkway or the wide veranda. The roof is supported by steel beams that are featured rather than concealed and make a delightful contrast with the warm colours of the timber ceiling and floors.
On the upper level the new section consists of a master bedroom suite, kitchen and deck, while downstairs is a bedroom/outdoor room, spa room and garage.
The guest house is connected to the homestead by timber stairs and pathway through the tropical garden. It consists of two pavilions connected by a bridge. The bridge opens up to be a breezeway in summer and closes to become a solarium in winter. The guest house is totally self contained providing a light filled north-facing living area, fully equipped kitchen and two bedrooms. Inside and out the decor is in harmony with the main house.
The free form pool is central to the homestead precinct and is complemented by a poolside deck, an extensive entertaining area under the original homestead and the spa room under the new pavilion.
An absolute feature of the property is the amazing light filled workshop. An architectural master-piece in itself it includes a massive covered apron that leads to around 120m² of timber floored workshop. Light enters the room from every side. The uses are limited only by your imagination.
The gallery, adjacent to the workshop, is a free standing pavilion in the homestead style, with verandas on all sides. Internally, the use of timber is just stunning. Cleverly designed skylights and a wonderful lighting system ensure the gallery is flooded with light at all times.
Under the workshop you will find a genuine cellar. A full brick, 10 meter tunnel with approximately 70 metres of shelving.
This property lends itself to so many options including guest accommodation, retreat, functions and so many more options.
